Different Ways to Make Plurals
In Sairupanese, there are multiple ways to indicate that a word is plural: adding a [-uz] or [-z] to the end of a word, sometimes making no change at all!
[-z] is used to indicate plural for words ending in vowels. For example, [mɛ̃zʎi] 'birds' becomes [mɛ̃zʎiz] ‘birds’ when [-z] is added since it ends in a vowel [i].
Nothing is added to the end of a word to indicate plural if it ends in a vowel followed by a [z]. For example, nothing is added to [bɑrpiz] ‘head’ to make it plural [bɑrpiz] ‘heads’.
[-uz] is used to indicate plural in all other situations! For example, [ŋõεj] ‘stone’ becomes [ŋõεjuz] ‘stones’ when [-uz] is added.
